George Anderson won the Secretary Trophy this year, beating Ian Wright, the only other contender by the time they played, in the last round. The third highest bisqued player was Jamieson Walker and he, like Ian, finished with 5 wins out of 7 to make it altogether a better day for the higher handicappers than the lower ones. Indeed these were the only players of the eight entrants who ended up making more hoops than they conceded.
Most players opted to take their
first ball to the peg (if they could) which meant that there were few
attempts at peels. Although "time" was called occasionally, the games were
always pegged out, so it was relatively easy to complete the round robin
of games and be home in time to watch the evening showing of the Lions
losing to the Wallabies. (And the next day you could watch the England
cricket team losing and Tim Henman losing but nowhere could you watch the
final of the Croquet World Championships.) David Appleton
