It was a weekend of close sporting encounters. England won the Cricket World Cup in a Golden Over having tied scores after 50 overs. Djokovic beat Federer at Wimbledon in a fifth set tie-break. But the most nail-bitingly exciting action took place at the Meadows Open.
7-8 September 2018, Albury and Northfield Centres
Hosted by Aberdeen and Crathes Croquet Club, 13 entered this year’s event with the regulars from the North of England and the Central Belt along with local players. Format 18 point handicap games with two hour time limits.
Blocks 1 and 2 were played at Albury with no clear winner in either. Qualifying on two wins each were George Plant and Steve Skelton (Block 1) and Hamish Duguid and Ian Hall (Block 2). It was interesting that all the qualifiers had fewer gross hoops than the 3rd/4th players. Block 3 was played at the new venue of Northfield Sports Centre, the lawns proving to be really flat and true. Both ACCC members Bill and Robert emerged as leaders on three wins and the final round between them would decide who played in the Final and Wine Final. As a result of his three wins Robert’s handicap was reduced from 18 to 16 - good news for Bill as he was now only conceding 6 bisques instead of 7½.
8-9 June 2019, Knightswood
Six players with a handicap range between 4 and 12 took part in this year's Middle Bisquers in Glasgow. Expecting the worst of weather on the Saturday we were delighted to experience a warm sultry day with only a brief 20 minute shower. The pleasant weather continued into the Sunday with a bright warm day. Throughout the weekend the lawns were even paced and the hoops more forgiving than very tight.
Using an all-play-all block results generally followed handicap levels with the exception of Bill Strachan's +19 win over Rosemary Saunders Robertson. Well done Bill! New Glasgow boy Calum Worsley (handicap 10) playing his first tournament in Scotland managed one win. We look forward to a fast-improving Calum on the Scottish scene. Your correspondent won all of his games in time but was most pressed by the higher handicap players (why I ask?) and therefore won this year's event.
