Before 1975 there had not been a trophy for consolation events, which had been organised as ‘Y’ events from 1972. In 1975 the Milne Trophy was donated by Mrs Milne, mother of past Edinburgh CC President Robert Milne, to Edinburgh CC for the winner of the consolation event for the 3-and-over handicap event. However, in 1976 it was first used for the consolation event of the Big Handicap event, the Edinburgh Trophy, and has been ever since.

The trophy was introduced in 1987, at which time the Silver Jubilee Salver had its handicap range increased to 8+ for Level Play.
(The March 1988 Bulletin number 32 marks the 1987 results as for the Silver Jubilee Salver, and does not mark any trophy for the 8+ Level Play event, and the report does not mention any trophy by name; the 1988 tournament report was in an early new-style Bulletin which did not list full tournament results, as these were intended to be included in the new-style Yearbook. Unfortunately this change in style meant that records of some results have not been found.)
