East v West v North of Scotland 2016

4-5 June, Kelvingrove

John OwenTwo days of uninterrupted sun, excellent lawns that got increasingly fast over the event and two teams playing a mix of AC handicap doubles, handicap singles and Golf Croquet.  Only two teams I hear you cry!  The East were a 'no-show' over both days for reasons unknown.   This was a real pity given the efforts of the North team to field a team in Glasgow over both days.

West of Scotland Championship 2015

3-4 October 2015, Kelvingrove

Alastair Burn-Murdoch won the West of Scotland after a very tense final round in which any of Alastair, David Houston and John Campbell could have emerged winners.    John Campbell was playing Lyn Gilpin on one of the upper lawns while David Houston was playing Alastair on one of the lower lawns.   Alastair had gone round to rover with his forward ball when David got in and went round, peeling Alastair through rover and pegging him out.   However Alastair hit in from the boundary south of Hoop 1 with David's balls joined a few feet south of Hoop 3.   Alastair then took a three ball break all the way round from Hoop 2 to finish.   It wasn't without its moments as there were numerous four or five yard roquets in the break, but Alastair's straight shooting saw him home.

CA v SCA 2014

30-31 August 2014, Middlesbrough

Three Scottish players - Brian Murdoch, Alan Wilson and Fergus McInnes - made their way down the A1 and were joined in Middlesbrough by three from further south - Sam Murray, David Magee and Derek Knight - in an attempt to wrest back the Glasgow Quaich from the English.

The teams appeared quite evenly matched, with the SCA handicaps at -0.5, 0, 0, 1.5, 3 and 3, and the CA at -0.5, 0.5, 1, 2, 2.5 and 4 - suggesting a slight advantage for the SCA if anything.  The opening doubles round was in line with this, going 2-1 to the SCA.  But in the singles things began going the wrong way for the Scots, and the score after the first day was 9-6 to the home side.

The first round on the second day increased the CA's lead to 13-8.  The SCA could still turn it around to 13-14 (a good scoreline for a Scottish victory!) but only by winning all six games in the final round.  This they failed to do, achieving only an equal split in the head-to-head games; and so the final result was CA 16, SCA 11.
