Scottish Select v Switzerland 2012

30 June and 1 July 2012, Meadows

This was the first encounter between the Scottish and Swiss teams since 2007, when the Swiss had won 11-9 in Geneva.  (After that a triennial schedule had been agreed, but Switzerland had not managed to raise a team in 2010.)  It broke new ground in two other ways besides the timing: the inclusion of Golf Croquet as well as Association Croquet (because of a shortage of Swiss AC players), and the participation of a Scottish-resident player in the Swiss team - namely Bryan Sykes, who could claim qualification for Switzerland because his father had been born there.

The three who travelled from Switzerland on this occasion were Norman Eatough, Dave Underhill and Desmond George - the fact that Des played only Golf Croquet being balanced by Bryan's playing only Association.  Arrayed against them were five Scottish players, of whom four took part in each round of games: Bill Spalding, Alan Wilson, Fergus McInnes, Jamieson Walker and Hamish Duguid.  The format gave Jamieson time off on Saturday to prepare for hosting the match dinner that evening, and gave Fergus a break in the middle of each day to set out and clear away lunch; it also meant that each player on the Swiss side met four different opponents in the singles, while avoiding any extreme mismatch on handicaps.  The order of play on each day had two singles rounds sandwiching one doubles round, with each round consisting of single AC games and best-of-three GC contests - except that one GC match in the final round was shortened to a single 19-point game to let Norman catch a train.  Saturday's results were evenly balanced, leaving the score at 5-5 overnight, but on Sunday the Scots won 8 out of 10 to make the final result 13-7 to the home side.

Meadows Open 2012

23-24 June 2012, Meadows

The Meadows Open was originally planned as a Strict Swiss, but this was quickly changed to a Flexible Swiss when Bryan Sykes rang on the Saturday morning to say that his overnight train from London had been delayed at Carlisle due to floods.    He eventually arrived at lunchtime having been diverted via Newcastle.  (Bryan himself is an Occasional Swiss, as readers of the SCA Select v Switzerland Select report will know).

Conditions were generally easy with only three games going to time (2.5 hour time limits), 6 TPs completed and many more attempted.   The highlight of the weekend was a large tree falling in the Meadows, just the other side of Melville Drive.    It made a very loud sound, many people were around and most heard it.  Luckily nobody was underneath it.

Congratulations to Alan Wilson who was a deserving winner having won all of his games and gaining a handicap reduction to 2½.  Full results below.

East v West of Scotland 2012

2-3 June 2012, Meadows

This tenth annual match between the East and West of Scotland was one of the closest in the series to date, with the outcome still in the balance as the last round began.  A total of 23 players took part in 10 games of Association Croquet and 33 games of Golf Croquet in the course of a cool but mostly dry and sunny weekend, with AC games counting for two points each and GC games for one point, and the final score was 28-25 to the West, increasing the side's advantage to 7-3 in the history of the event.

SCA B-Level (Middle Bisquers) 2012

16-17 June 2012, Glasgow

With 6 competitors it was decided to play a round robin which would then allow time for a play-off if necessary. So on a wet Saturday morning, Alan Wilson (3) arrived to find Robert Inder (5) hiding from the rain while watching Joe Lennon (9) and Robert Lay (14) try to measure out the North boundary on one of the lower lawns. This had been pressed into service because one of the upper lawns had not been cut recently and no-one could find the hoop holes! Jamieson Walker (8) and Jola Jurasinska (16) soon arrived and play started only slightly late. Time limits were set at 2hr 30 min because of the heavy conditions and forecast for the weekend as this would allow players a chance to dry off and get a hot drink in between games. It was also decided that everyone would get the pleasure of playing on the lower lawn at least once. Fortunately the weather forecast was overly pessimistic and there were only a few showers. Only 4 games went to time despite the heavy lawns and most games went to handicap. Joe was involved in both the upsets, losing to Robert Lay who hit the lift with his hoop 1 ball, when on penult with the other, and went round peeling penult straight but finding the rover peel beyond him, and beating Robert Inder by going to 2-back 4th turn then keeping the pressure on Robert in what became quite a scrappy game.

As a result of games going mainly to handicap the final round saw Alan (4/4) needing to beat Robert Inder (3/4) to avoid the need for a play-off. Robert played well but made the mistake of taking his 4b ball to peg when Alan broke down at 5. After Robert failed to approach 1 with 3 attempts Alan finally hit in with his back ball and went round pegging Robert off and conceding contact. In the 3 ball ending Robert played well and hit in on more than one occasion but failed to pick up the 3-ball break he needed allowing Alan to use his experience to win +4 on time. So Alan retained the trophy but should be ineligible next year if he continues to play well.

Scottish Masters 2012

26-27 May 2012, Meadows

Ten players contested the Scottish Masters Tournament in warm and sunny conditions which made a welcome contrast to the cold weather of April and early May.  Only the drifting smoke of many barbecues diminished the blaze of the sun in a cloudless sky.  The holder of the trophy for the past four years, James Hopgood, was not available to defend it this time, but the field included the two preceding winners Alan Wilson and Fergus McInnes and five-times winner John Surgenor.  Alongside John in the Glasgow contingent were Bill Spalding, Joe Lennon and Robert Lay, while Campbell Morrison, Jane Morrison, Martin Stephenson and Robert Inder completed the roll of Meadow Club members.  Handicaps ranged from Campbell's -0.5 to Joe Lennon's 9 and Robert Lay's 14, with all the rest in the 1 to 5 range.
