Scottish Golf Croquet Championship 2013
3 August 2013, Alexandra Park
Only six players competed in this year's Scottish GC Open - the smallest number since 2009. This meant that a single block of six played five rounds, with a play-off to decide any ties based on games won. With the top Scottish-resident players (James Hopgood, Jane Morrison and Campbell Morrison) not taking part, which was partly due to the imminent World AC Championship in London, the top seed came from Australia - Peter Freer from Canberra. Next in the rankings were Jamieson Walker, Jola Jurasinska and George Geis from Edinburgh and then Lesley van Vliet and Anne Prees from Glasgow.
Results are available on http://www.croquetscores.com/2013/gc/scottish-championship/block (and below), with several upsets including Jola winning her game against Peter. This meant that Jamieson and Peter both finished on four wins out of five; requiring a final - played as a best of three match. This was decisively won by Peter 7-2, 7-1 to win the Walker Bowl.
The weather was sunny for the final, after being overcast and very windy for the block round, but without significant rain. The two courts at Sannox Gardens were slightly slow, but quite playable; although Glasgow CC looks forward to their return to Kelvingrove after the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Thanks to the Glasgow Club for hosting the event, and to Peter Freer and Richard Sparrow for setting the hoops and Peter for managing the event in the absence of the normal volunteers.
