The Spring Weekend 2017 was won by John-Paul Moberly in an exciting shoot out at the peg. At the end of the tournament (a flexible Swiss) four players were tied on 4/6 wins: Roger Binks, Brian Durward and Alistair Malcolm being the others.
Rosemary Saunders Robertson had been unbeaten after day one, on three wins but lost to Roger on Sunday morning. John-Paul had been on two wins overnight and despite an early loss to Alistair on Sunday he came back from certain defeat against Bill Strachan to win +2. Bill had played a perfect three-ball break (having been pegged out) only to stick in rover and John-Paul then went around on a three- and sometimes two-ball break to claim a close victory. His play improved further in his next win over Brian, completing two peels of a triple only to fail the half-jump at rover. Meanwhile Brian and Alistair had notched up four wins each to create the manager’s nightmare. Unable to sort them out any other way, a shoot-out at the peg was declared where John-Paul’s world class GC skills came to the fore and he hit the peg 3/5 times to win the trophy.
