Meadows Open 2018

14-15 July 2018, Meadows

Neither the World Cup nor the Wimbledon finals stopped the Meadows AC Open from having a full entry list, with 13 competitors taking part. The boundary lines had been freshly painted by Jola and Jamieson and the lawns were in good shape thanks to the efforts or Danny the gardener, and George Plant and the Green Team. The sprinkler system had been in use over the gloriously dry and sunny summer meaning that the lawns, although not slow, did not rival the dusty brown ice-rink pace of Balgreen. A little light drizzle on the Friday also helped ease the ground a little, making hoop moving easier.

Summer Weekend 2018

7-8 July 2018, Balgreen

Stefan Colling won the Summer Weekend with an outstanding performance in his first ever competition.

Playing off 22 Stefan was persuaded to enter the competition after a late withdrawal left 15 players. He wasn’t sure he would be good enough but impressed everyone with his straight hitting and use of bisques to set and play four-ball breaks, showing he had paid attention during his coaching sessions with Brian Durward.

Golf Croquet Handicap 2018

17 June 2018, Meadows

The event was played at the Meadows Croquet Club on a relatively dry day. It was decided to play an all play all round robin with six rounds. Eight entries were reduced to seven with a late withdrawal on the Saturday evening.

Bruce played well right from the start, using his extra turns to good effect. After losing to Bruce in his first game George won the rest of his games and Bruce’s final game against Brian secured his victory with six wins against George’s five.

Congratulations to Bruce who took away the trophy and a reduced handicap. Thanks to all the competitors for their help and support throughout the day and to Rachel for providing afternoon tea.

Scottish Open 2018

23-24 June 2018, Meadows

The Scottish Open was played in glorious sunshine on the fast and occasionally challenging lawns at Meadows. The single game first round produced the first upset with Bob Darling beating seventh seed John Surgenor. The second surprise came in the best-of-three quarter final when Alastair Burn-Murdoch took the first game off reigning world champion Paddy Chapman from New Zealand. Paddy had laid up for a sextuple with a cross wire around hoop one but Alastair hit the tea lady and finished with a 26-6 score. Paddy then completed two triples to win the match. The semi-finals saw Paddy complete another couple of triples to beat Richard H Smith and James Hopgood beat Mark Ormerod.

Scottish Golf Croquet Championship 2018

16 June 2018, Meadows

Lorna DewarLorna Dewar won the Scottish Golf Croquet Championship.

A full complement of 12 players contested the championship. Despite fairly constant rain being forecast the weather was mainly dry except for one short, sharp shower and the lawns stayed playable despite the manager’s fears. The format was two American blocks, seeded by ranking with the top two in each block playing a knock-out while the rest played a final cross-block game.

In Block A Dave Widdison won all five games while Fergus Thompson only lost to Dave. In Block B Lorna Dewar and Alan Wilson both won 4/5 with Lorna declared the winner by having a higher “points for” total.

Both semi-finals were very close with Dave beating Alan 7-6 when Alan’s attempted jump shot from five yards clipped Dave’s jawsed ball just enough to promote it through hoop 13, while Lorna scraped past Fergus, also at hoop 13. The final was a high quality game with accurate shooting and ball placement. Played as a 19-point game it went to the final hoop where Lorna jawsed her ball and Dave just failed with a jump attempt leaving Lorna to run the hoop and take the trophy.
